Rutherford recommends Influenza Website

Tuesday, December 23, 2003 Posted 10:30 p.m.
Pontiac- State Senator Dan Rutherford (R-Pontiac) is advising individuals concerned with the flu virus to consult the Illinois Department of Public Health's (IDPH) influenza website at www.idph.state.il.us/flu/fluhome.htm.

"People throughout Illinois are currently experiencing a rough flu season." Rutherford continued, "It is important that people are aware of the dangers of influenza and especially essential that those at risk receive the vaccine."

The Department of Public Health's website indicates those most at risk are healthy children 6-23 months, adults over 65 years, pregnant women in their second or third trimester and children under 2 years of age with chronic health conditions.

"I encourage anyone who has not yet received the vaccine to do so. Contact either your local health care provider or your county health department for details," said Rutherford. IDPH's influenza webpage has each county's health department information listed on their site.

IDPH also advises healthy persons to practice good hygiene to guard against developing the virus. Washing hands and remaining at home when fever or respiratory illness symptoms develop are encouraged.
