Rutherford comments on Ryan's indictment

Thursday, December 18, 2003 Posted 11:30 a.m. by Senator Dan Rutherford
"This is a painful time in Illinois history. Hopefully, this ordeal will soon be behind us, having played itself out in the judicial process. If guilt is ultimately proven, I would expect that punishment would be to the fullest extend of the law.

"Incidents like this prove all the more that people with the highest standards of integrity need to be more involved in the political process to ensure that things are done right and above board. Already, state government is taking steps toward that end. In recent months, Illinois has made great strides and advancements in regards to ethics. We have new laws that reinforce the standards of ethical behavior and include safeguards to prevent future abuses of state resources.

"It is my hope that such steps as these will restore the average citizen's faith in state government and allow us, as elected officials, to direct our full attention to the work of the people of Illinois."
