Sesquicentennial committee to sell calendars, T-shirts

Thursday, December 4, 2003 Posted 3:30 p.m.
Minonk's sesquicentennial committee met Wednesday night to plan events for the City's 150th anniversary celebration June 10-13. Chairperson Cathy McKay presented a checklist of possible events for the committee to study. Among the events discussed were a car show, flea market, ice-cream social in the park, band concert in the new Westside Park pavilion, a display on the history of Minonk's mines and the equipment used, a strolling barbershop quartet, combined church service in the park, 3 on 3 basketball, children's games, a business tent, food court, and musical entertainment. An attempt will be made to get a good carnival for the event.

The committee decided to have a beard growing contest. Prizes will be given for the longest beard and for the best groomed beard. In addition, a period dress contest will be held in which a prize will be given to the best designed and most accurate clothing apparel for a given time period up to within the last 50 years. The committee also wants to encourage local businesses to decorate their store windows with decorations or objects from the past.

To help fund the celebration, the committee will be selling a commemorative calendar and T-shirt. Both items will be on sale this Saturday in downtown Minonk before and after the Parade of Lights. The calendar has 12 pictures of old Minonk along with a history of each picture. The calendar also has a brief history of Minonk's origins. The T-shirt has a picture of Minonk's Jumbo that was removed 14 years ago. The calendars cost $15 each and the T-shirts cost $10 each for sizes M, L, and XL. XXL will sell for $12. The calendar and T-shirts can be bought this Saturday afternoon between 3 and 9 p.m. during the Parade of Lights festivities. The items will be on sale at Country Florist, Picket Fence, Cunningham's Candies, and Pop's Sweet Shop. After Saturday the items can be bought at Pop's Sweet Shop. Anyone wishing to order a calendar or T-shirt by mail must add $4 for postage and shipping. Make your check payable to 'The Sesquicentennial Committee' and send to:
