Train wreck - 1901

The fast train, No. 153, Southbound that went through Minonk every morning at 7:30 overturned into a ditch on June 20, 1901. Eight freight cars were piled up and the engine and the cars were a total loss of $25,000.

The accident was reported as follows in the Minonk News. "The cause of the wreck was an open switch. Those who understand such matters and who are familiar with the working of switches, say that the switch had been opened by someone with the intention of causing a wreck. It may never be known just how it happened or who did it, but if the switch was purposely turned on by human hands it was a most diabolical trick and the perpetrator should be hanged, if caught."
