Rutherford: Circuit court finds fee increases unconstitutional

Thursday, December 2, 2004 Posted 6:30 p.m.
Pontiac - A Cook County Circuit Court judge ruled that the substantial fee increases recently imposed on Illinois businesses and consumers were unconstitutional and struck the fee increase down, setting the stage for a potential repeal of the additional fee increases the Blagojevich Administration pushed through the General Assembly last year.

"There have been over 300 fee increases in the last two years," Rutherford said. "I do not believe we should raise fees for businesses and individuals and sneak it into the General Revenue Fund, and it seems the Illinois courts are agreeing with me."

Rutherford said that a list of all the fee increases can be found on the Committee for Legislative Action website, located at www.CommitteeForLegislativeAction.org, and can be accessed by clicking on the "Fee Increases" tab. Sen. Rutherford is the chairman of the Committee for Legislative Action.

"There is a petition on the website that allows the people of Illinois to join the courts in telling the Governor that hurting Illinois business and raising taxes unfairly is not the way to balance the budget." Rutherford also explained, "The General Assembly and the Governor need to work together to solve the budget crisis, these fees will only hurt the State more in the long run."
