Veterans Day was observed at the Fieldcrest High School gymnasium Friday morning. All
Fieldcrest students were assembled in the gym for the ceremony. Area veterans sat as
a group in front of the assembly.
The ceremony started with the presentation of the colors followed by the Pledge of
Allegiance led by Fieldcrest student Jordan Ruestman. The guest speaker was Fieldcrest
teacher Sean Poston. Mr. Poston explained that Veterans Day was originally known as
Armistice Day to commemorate World War I veterans. Eventually, it became known as Veterans
Day and honors all veterans. Mr. Poston also read parts of a letter from his brother-in-law
who is serving in Iraq.
Winners of the DAR and SAR awards were announced. Brooke Baldwin was given the DAR award and
Matt Morris was given the SAR award. Qualifications for the awards including being a descendant
of a Revolutionary War veteran.
At the end of the ceremony veterans were asked to stand when their branch of military service was recognized.
The ceremony concluded outside with a 21 gun salute and the playing of taps by Molly Canty.
The color guard fired a 21 gun salute at the ceremony.
