Westside Park pavilion turned over to city

Thursday, October 7, 2004 Posted 5:30 p.m.
The Westside Park pavilion was officially turned over to the city in a ceremony 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 9, at the pavilion. Mayor Mark Spencer received the key to the pavilion from Dave Uphoff, a member of the Westside Park pavilion Adhoc Committee.

Committee Chairman Dean Barth thanked those who donated their time and their money to make the construction of the pavilion possible. Barth said that even though the pavilion is complete, the committee still encourages donation towards the pavilion to help fund improvements and maintenance on the pavilion.

Mayor Mark Spencer praised the committee for their work and said that everyone had told him that construction of the pavilion would be impossible.

Committee member Dave Uphoff also thanked those who helped in the construction of the pavilion and said that the beautiful new pavilion is a symbol of the quality of the community that we live in.

Since its completion, the pavilion has been used every weekend for reunions, birthday parties, and other social gatherings and has proved to be a worthwhile addition to the community. The kitchen has not been completed but the restrooms are fully functional and landscaping has been completed.

Presently, the restrooms are locked every evening and opened every morning by Minonk police. The restrooms will be closed for the winter season in November.

The pavilion was constructed with volunteers from the labor and trade unions and from local volunteers. Over 55 % of the cost of the pavilion was funded by private donations. Contributions are still being accepted to help with the maintenance and improvements for the pavilion.
