Minonk native elected head of Florida statewide group of clubs

TAMPA WOMAN ELECTED HEAD OF STATEWIDE GROUP OF CLUBS

Pat Keel likes to tell people that a women's service club "saved my life" because it helped her make friends after moving to Tampa in 1961. Now the grandmother of 11 will become the first Tampa woman in more than 60 years to lead the 15,000-member GFWC Florida Federation of Women's Clubs. Keel was elected president-elect of the statewide organization of 250 clubs and will assume the presidency in Aprl 2006. The Florida organization if part of the International General Federation of Women's Clubs, a service club. Soon after moving to Tampa with her husband, C.J. Keel, Jr., she was invited to the Tampa Junior Woman's Club. "I got active in Tampa and have loved it ever since," said Keel, a former president of the Tampa Woman' Club. The South Tampa resident has held several positions on the state board and will oversee 27 districts as president-elect. The last state president from the Tampa district was Lucille King, dean of girls at the University of Tampa, in1942.
