Minonk's sesquicentennial committee met Wednesday night at City Hall to plan the events
for Minonk's 150th birthday celebration to be held on June 11-13. Chairperson Cathy McKay
presented a list of possible events and their time frames to the committee for evaluation.
McKay felt that she had an excellent chance of landing a good carnival for the celebration.
Many of the events that were part of the Fourth of July celebration will be moved to the
sesquicentennial celebration. T-shirts and calendars commemorating the event are still for
sale. The committee decided that there will be no re-order on calendars. However, there are still a
few available for sale at Pop's in downtown Minonk.
Committee member Ron Redenius said that a beard growing contest will be held. Those who do not
grow a beard can buy a button for $2.50 as a penalty. Chairperson McKay said
that she has sent a letter to the Air National Guard Band requesting their appearance on Sunday,
June 13 for a concert in the Westside Park Pavilion but has not heard back from them yet.
Scott Johnson said that the car show will be held on Saturday, June 12. Lanna Ruestman is in
charge of organizing a business tent where businesses can advertise or sell their products. Any
businesses wishing to setup for the business tent should contact Cathy McKay or Lanna Ruestman.
Chuck Miller from Sauder & Rippel Implement will organize an antique tractor show to be held in
the dealership's parking lot. A combined church service was suggested by Jari Lynn Oncken who
said she will discuss the event's possibility with the Minonk Ministerial Association.
The committee will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, February 4, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
