Nelson H. Gunther - August 15, 2002

Services for Nelson H. Gunther, 84 of R.R.2, Minonk, will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 19, 2002 at St. Paul-s United Church of Christ, Minonk with Rev. Daniel Gansch-Boythe officiating. Burial will follow in Minonk Township Cemetery with military rites conducted by Minonk and El Paso American Legion and VFW Posts. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. Sunday at Folkers-Froelich Memorial Home and for one hour before the service Monday at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul-s United Church of Christ 236 W. 5th St., Minonk or to Minonk Producers 4H Club.

Mr. Gunther passed away 12:31 P.M. Thursday, August 15, 2002 at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria

He was born March 2, 1918 in Morton, the son of Mose Martin and Inez Otto Gunther. He married Lucille Harms April 27, 1963 in Minonk, She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Joy (Dan) McDowell, LaGrange and Kris (Jeff) Ellingson, Geneva; Three grandchildren Bridget McDowell, Brinn McDowell and Trey Ellingson; One sister, Winona Kling, Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Gilbert, Glenn, Dean and one sister Violet.

Mr. Gunther served in World War II from January 1941 to October 1945. He served in European Theatre in Battery F. Coast Artillery Corp and the 18th Field Artillery. He was a member of the American Legion Post #59 and the VFW Post #6026 both in El Paso. Since the end of WWII he actively arranged his annual army reunion.

He was a farmer all of his life, an active 4H leader for over 40 years, was well known for his traffic control abilities during 4H fairs. An active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, he served on the Church Council, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was responsible for many of the church maintenance and upkeep projects.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother Nelson will be missed by all who knew him.
