Coal mine pictures from the past

The above photo shows a view of the Minonk coalmine looking north 1/2 mile north of the city. The trees in the lower part of the photo was the residence of the Walter Renken family back in the 1940's. Below are more photos of miners at work in the mines from newspaper clippings from the 1920's provided by Jim Flynn of Rutland whose father worked in the mines. The actual length of the mine tunnels was closer to 1 and 1/2 miles west and 1 mile north rather than the 2 and 1/2 miles stated in the newspaper article.
