Fieldcrest Board weighs attendance center options

Wednesday, May 25, 2016 - Posted 9:27:30 PM
The Fieldcrest Board of Education discussed the various attendance center options presented to them by Superintendent Dr. Dan Oakley at their regular board meeting Wednesday night.  The three options presented with their associated effects are shown below:

Option 1: PK-2 South/3-5 West/ 6-8 East
  • Even number of grade levels
  • Keeps all buildings open
  • Would cost $65,000 extra in transportation cost

Option 2: PK-4 West/5-8 East/ Close South
  • Several rooms at West are inadequate to contain 25 elementary students
  • This option is not an adequate solution
Option 3: PK-3 West/ 4-8 East/ Close South
  • South cannot hold either classes because of size limitations
  • Cost factor would save $160,000 the first year due to transportation
  • Cost would continue to decline
  • Would eliminate need for HLS improvements at South which would save $1 million in future.
Dr. Oakley's analysis indicated that only options 1 and 3 are viable adding that option 3 meets the goal of attendance centers and will provide significant cost reduction to status quo.

Board member Scott Hillenburg said he is in favor of attendance centers but did not think closing South was a good solution since it is the only building that has air conditioning which makes for a better learning environment for the students.

Board member Tim McNamara said he is in favor of attendance centers and is in favor of closing South.  He said we need to become more efficient and reduce personnel cost.

Board President Joe Kirkpatrick also favored attendance centers since they enable the school to be more efficient.  He felt that the extra cost of $65,000 for transportation cost for option 1 was well worth the cost.

Board member Greg Kroeschen said he can't see spending $65,000 by selecting option 1.

The board will vote on which option to select at the June meeting.  If an attendance center option is adopted, it would be effective for the school year of 2017-2018 allowing for a year to prepare for the move.

In other business, a group from Toluca presented a petition signed by residents stating their opposition to attendance centers if it results in increased cost.

Basketball coach Laura Horton submitted her resignation.

The board approved a one year extension of the Superintendent's contract to June 2019.

The board rejected a motion that would adopt the PRESS Board Policy Update mandated by the State.  The policy update specified that preset consequences cannot be established for individual infractions by a student.  Each infraction or violation has to be handled on a case by case basis and future consequences cannot be specified for additional infractions.

Superintendent Oakley said the school enrollment started at 1100 and ended up with 1087.
