Thank you Dave

I come and check Minonk Talk a couple times a week and today you brought me to tears. I want to thank you Dave for a very nice surprise. Mike has worked very hard and I know in these last few years I have not been the "supportive wife" but I live with Mike and have seen where this club has just become to daunting of a task for him. He worked hard to get funding to pay for all these years of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter Sessions. He is so appreciative of all the support he did get from business here in Minonk and surrounding towns. His brother Randy who owns and operates Lincor in Canton, has also been so generous in helping keep Mike's dream alive. With the economy, the way it is and not all the players working as hard as Mike to raise money, has taken it's toll on Mike.

I myself will not miss the craziness on "Game Day". You would have to be here to know what I mean. It is quite the scene and has and will continue to make for some good laughs with me, Mike and our children.

We really hope someone, some day soon, will step up and fill his shoes and not let that beautiful field go unused for Soccer. I have heard Referees from other towns say that they have only officiated on a couple nice fields in Central Illinois and of course Heartland College is one of them and that is because it was new and then the one that Mike and the city of Minonk built.

I just hope that all of the people that played for Mike all these years will keep in touch with him. He truly talks about them here as if they were in our family.

Thank you again Dave for a very nice Editorial.

Mid State Stars

Dave, thank you for the great article on the Mike Zimmerman and the Mid State Stars. Being a friend of Mike and having my kids play for him, I know he spent countless hours coaching, mentoring, and hauling kids to soccer practices and games. Not once did he ask for anything in return. I know from personal experience as well, when you put that much time and effort into a program, be it soccer, chess, 4H or anything, it is more than just a program, It's in your heart and in your soul. All you really want is for the kids to have a chance to play, learn something along the way, and if the opportunity and desire is there, continue to play the game they love in college. And the true rewards do not come from wins on the field, they come from helping the kids grow, learn, mature and apply the skills and knowledge they learned at games and practices to off the field situations and succeed. We all know that is where they will benefit the most. Nobody exhibited this approach better than Mike and his impact on our youth will sorely be missed over time. Thank you Mike for everything you have done!

Rich Luckey

Thank you

I would like to thank everyone that helped to celebrate Rachel Thorpe's 85th Birthday. She was very surprised having a card party, a get together with all her friends, and the many gifts, flowers, and balloons. Her grand-daughters, Angela Newberry and Theresa McClernon did a nice job getting a cookout arranged also on Sunday. Rachel appreciated everyone's visit while cake and punch was served at the community building at South Haven the day of her Birthday.
God Bless

HOI Blue Star Mother's Fundraiser

This Saturday, July 20th, from 1-7pm the Heart of Illinois Blue Star Mother's will be having a fundraiser at the Benson American Legion. We will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans, potato salad, chips, dessert and drink. We will have live entertainment, several raffle items, bake sale and live auction.

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. is a non-partisan, non-political organization. We do not support any political candidate nor do we endorse any religious organization. The military represents all aspects of America as does our organization. We are here to support our troops, our veterans, one another, and the cause of patriotism.

Money raised from this event will help defray the costs of sending care packages/boxes to our troops serving overseas. We send boxes out twice a year to help remind the Soldiers protecting our freedom that we support them with a "Bit of Home".

I hope that everyone will take some time out of their day on Saturday to come help support us in our efforts to continue to support our Troops!!!

Thank you!!

Minonk downtown fire

So sorry to hear of this terrible tragedy in your beautiful town. I only recently have become interested in knowing as much as I possibly can about the history of your area as I have been researching the town and its inhabitants from the late 1800s. It is always sad and disheartening to hear of any historic town and its buildings destroyed. Im hoping that the library is not one of them. I have been trying, unsuccessfully to find some way to obtain the historical book written by one of your own, TALES OF TREES published years ago about the history of Minonks people. If anyone reading this might know how to get a copy, please send info to Bonnie Lennon 305 Saddle Horn Circle Roswell, Ga 30076. My great grandfather; Carl Gadow (Yaddof) was one of the earlier settlers in Minonk.
Thank you. BL

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to put up and take down the flags for the Avenue of Flags at both Minonk cemeteries. Anyone wishing to help put up the flags should meet at St Pat's cemetery at 6:00 a.m. on July 4th and to take them down at 6:00 p.m. starting at the Minonk Township cemetery. If it is raining at 6:00 a.m. the flags will not be put up. If it has rained at anytime during the day and the flags are still wet, they will not be taken down until they are dry....hopefully the next day at 6:00 p.m. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
