School Prank

Hello Dave. I read your letter today, the prank at the high school was led by my grandfather Bob Morrison. He shared that story with us many times and I enjoyed how he would tell it.

Thanks.

looking for information

My father, Bob Mitchell, owned a florist shop in Minonk in the 1970s. If anyone has any information or pictures, I was wondering if you could contact me. He passed away about 17 years ago, but I am trying to gather some information on him, as we were estranged. He also married a lady named Marilyn. I have no idea if she was from Minonk or not. I'm not even sure that she is still alive. The last I heard she was living in Hawaii, but I have lost contact with her. If anyone has any information, please contact me at coolmitch54@gmail.com . Thank you. I do remember going to Minonk several times during the summer of 1970 and part of 1971. I joined the Navy in July of '71 and I spent some time with him in Minonk before I left. Thanks for any and all help you can provide.

Steve Mitchell

Lost items found

Dead tree...

The dead tree that is causing all the problems happens to be in the yard next to mine, and it has been dead since we moved in over 3 years ago. I personally know the owners and if the tree was at a risk for falling it could possibly damage some of our property. I have chatted with the neighbors about this tree, and we have no complaints. When the wind storms hit in June, you could drive through town and see tree branches all over the ground from live trees. We did not have so much as a stick from the dead tree behind our house after those storms.
The homeowner's have not once been contacted by the city, or anyone else for that matter about removing the tree. They have gotten bids themselves to have it taken down in the past, they just haven't been able to do it yet.
I agree with Kari about being disappointed in the citizens of Minonk, this community has always prided itself on helping out other citizens, and I also think it's silly to post snide comments about it. If you are that worried about the tree, visit the homeowners or invite them to join you at the city council meeting so it can get resolved.

The Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps visit Minonk

This past Tuesday, Minonk was treated to a unique show. The Glassmen Drum Corps from Toledo, Ohio came here to rest, warm up, and rehearse for a DCI (Drum Corps International) competition in Metamora that evening. They arrived at FHS at 2:30 am where they went into the gym, blew up their air mattresses and went to sleep. They awoke around 7:30, ate breakfast and went out to the football field where they immediately began working. All morning they did calisthenics, stretches, warm-ups and drill rehearsals. After lunch, they rehearsed music and marching until mid-afternoon. The first big rain that hit Minonk on Tuesday happened with about one minute to go in their final run-through. They went back to the high school, ate again and loaded the busses for Metamora where they did an outstanding job. Despite the ending of their rehearsal, they seemed to have a very productive day.

For the people that came and watched them rehearse, they were able to see a level of dedication and commitment rarely seen anywhere. The members range in age from mid-high school to 21. They travel all summer from state to state rehearsing and performing non-stop.

With any luck, we will be able to have them back next year. If so, I would encourage you to come and watch them in action. It is a great opportunity, and it is in our own backyard!

Rusty Russell

ps.
I would like to thank the staff of Fieldcrest for accommodating them, and the city of Minonk for the use of the facilities!

Russell

Reply to Dead Tree on Elm Street

Instead of the city paying for this tree to be removed they should offer the homeowners an option. Either they have the tree removed themselves or the city will remove it and they will recieve the bill.

Thank you from 4th of July Committee

Dave:

Just a note to let everyone know that the Minonk 4th of July Committee truly appreciates all of the support of the many individuals and businesses that have assisted us as we put together the 4th of July Celebration this year. Without your help this event could not happen.

I would also like to take this time to THANK the committee as they put in a lot of time and effort to make this event a success. Without these folks this event would not have occurred. I can't thank them enough for the many meetings, the endless phone calls, all of the organizing, purchasing, finding volunteers to assist and the many, many other things that they did.

Let me take this time to mention their names: Sue Park, Pat Copp, Stephanie Fuchs, Scott & Melissa Hillenburg, Ken Baker, Todd Minz, Julie Redenius, Kristen Manning, Audrey Manning, Sonja Frei, Brenda Weber, Candi Jackson, Billie Stokowski, Terry Kalkwarf, Chip Kalkwarf, Bob and Kathy Jackson, Jack Jochums, Tammy Liedtka, Heather Peiffer, Lori Kapraun, and myself, Cathy McKay. If you should see these folks please let them know how much you appreciated their efforts on your behalf, they don't hear it nearly often enough. THANK YOU!!!

Other groups of volunteers that we rely on every year:
- the group of fire works volunteers for fantastic fire works displays year after year. This year's display was the best. Thanks for all of your hard work.
- the city employees who assist us tremendously with all of the many tasks that they perform - please let them receive your thanks as well.

The last group that deserves a big thank you is the many volunteers that the committee relies on to assist us as we attempt to organize each event. These events would not be possible without all of your help - thank you as well.

One such group that I need to thank publicly is the many, many volunteers that have assisted me through the years with the parade. Let me mention this years volunteers for you to thank as well: Sue Park, Billie Stokowski, Glennda and Mark Weers, Julie Schmidt, Heather Peiffer, Lori Kapraun, Bob and Kathy Jackson, Jerry Kemp, Durre Brothers, Jack Jochums, Jay Hurd, and Joel Jochums. Without the help of these folks you would not have a parade. Thank You!!!

This is just a few of the many volunteers through the years - THANK YOU!!

Sincerely,

Cathy McKay

Heartfelt thank you to Charlie & Jeanie Mc Guire

We recently placed an ad on Minonk talk about a missing kitten. We thought we would never hear anything. Our prayers were answered when Charlie McGuire showed up at our door with the kitty in hand. He told us they had seen the ad on the Minonk Talk website, and knew it was the same cat. Charlie and Jeanie offered to keep the kitty and give it a good home, as we have taken in a mom cat and her kittens, so we have more cats than we need. It is so good to know that there are people who care not only about stray animals, but also the feelings of their neighbors here in Minonk. Thanks Charlie and Jeanie, God Bless You!! LOST keys

We lost a set of keys 4th of July weekend and we are hoping someone found them. They may be with a white and gray, zip-up hoodie, or they may be floating around on their own.
The keychain has 2 identical small silver keys, 1 big silver key for a vehicle, 1 key with black plastic for a Saturn, and a small gold key with black plastic.
If anyone has found these keys, we would really appreciate it if you could contact us at 815-822-2225.
Thank you so much!

Dead Elm tree

What I want to know is where in the little blurb stating
"Alderwoman Julie Redenius said the owner of the property on Walnut Street which has the huge dead elm tree got a bid of $700 to remove the tree. The owners can't afford to take it down now but may do it later," does it say that the city is paying for ANYTHING to be taken down? Maybe it was discussed at the meeting in more detail, but from what I understand is that they, the owners may do it later when they can afford it. If a tree on their property is bothering you so much why don't you do the neighborly thing and grab a chainsaw and help them take it down. I have always had such pride in our community because people are always jumping at a chance to help the others in it. It really disappoints me to see people making such snide comments when it is obviously something that the homeowners can not fix at this time.

Wenona Boy Scouts Recruiting

Wenona Boy Scouts are starting a new scout year and are looking for boys 11 to 17 or have completed 5th grade. We try to go on campouts or other outings every month. We go to Canada canoeing, fishing, water skiing, and sailing about every other year. We go caving, rock climbing, and Geocaching. We try to keep the boys busy and learn to be good citizens. Activities like steak sandwich sales for the Wenona Days and paper pickups help us defer the cost of our gear and summer camp expenses. If your boys are interested in joining us, please call me at 815-343-8100 or 815-853-4066.

Thank you Roger Gabrielse,

Dead tree on Elm Street

Regarding dead tree on Elm Street from City meeting minutes: this tree has been dead for several years (we have lived on Walnut st since 1998 and it has been dead all this time). the homeowners are using the city to remove something that they should take care of themselves, anybody else would have to remove it themselves I do not agree with the decision of city paying for the removal of the dead tree, alternative is City needs to issue a fine instead of paying for removal of it. They were going to fine us for having a car sitting on OUR property because of no license on it..........what is wrong here?
