Thanks to Village-Aires for Professional Presentation

Dear Editor,

My wife and I attended the Minonk Village-Aires' presentation of "In Search of the Christmas Star" on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at the St. Paul's United Church of Christ.

It was a very professionally done presentation relating the true meaning of Christmas and the true Christmas Spirit.

I would like to thank all the members of the Village-Aires, Director Elaine Cunningham, and all others who were involved making it a super presentation.

I was in high school when Jack Jochums played a good basketball game for Minonk-Dana/Minonk-Dana-Rutland. He can still do a great job of singing.

Sincerely,

Harold Lindley - Class of '57

Minonk Ambulance 40th Anniversary Cookbook Sale

The Minonk Ambulance Association is having a 40th anniversary cookbook sale. The proceeds from the sale will go towards furthering our education and training and also member support. We would like to thank everyone who donated recipes to make this cookbook possible. We have also included a few recipes from our services 25th anniversary cookbook. We felt it necessary to include our past members who have paved the way for us today. Our service was started in 1971 by a very dedicated group of people and i am happy to say that we still carry on that tradition today.

Anyone interested in purchasing a cookbook can contact any member of our service or contact us at the station. The cost of the cookbooks are $10.00. Our ambulance service members would like to thank the entire community for their continued support.

treadmill

I'm looking for a treadmill that has the incline position on it. We try to walk outside but it's getting pretty chilly.

Thanks in advance

Thank You to Parade of Lights Volunteers

I just wanted to give a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who helped me with this year's Parade of Lights. The parade would not be the success it is without all the people who gave up their time to organize media, pick up candy, work on floats, pull floats, direct traffic, line up the entries... to name just a few of the duties. Thank you to all the businesses and individuals who donated money to sponsor the floats and fireworks. This parade works entirely on donations so without you the parade would not be here. Jack Klendworth, thanks for keeping the floats in sync and I owe you lunch. Everybody also needs to thank Jack Jochums and his family, without them we would not even have a parade. See you next year.

Greetings from Arizona

Dear Mr. Uphoff,

Several years ago, I bought an old book (copyright 1887) from a used bookstore here in Tucson. Glued inside the front cover is a bookplate that reads "From the library of Thomas Kennedy, Minonk, Ills." I had never heard of Minonk and frankly didn't give it much thought at the time.

I recently picked up the book again, became curious about that bookplate, and decided to do a little online investigation. Google led me to an article on MinonkTalk describing the building of the Stoddard Highway in 1916, and after checking out a couple of additional websites, I feel it's quite likely that my book originally belonged to Minonk's Judge Thomas Kennedy. I'd love to know how it got from Minonk to Tucson, but I'm delighted just to have learned a bit about where it came from and who Judge Kennedy was.

I've enjoyed perusing the old photos and stories on MinonkTalk, but tonight I came across the news of the terrible fire that destroyed so much of your downtown recently. Having grown up in a small town myself, I know that such an event can be devastating to the entire community. I also know, however, that the fellowship, resilience, and indomitably of small-town folks are great assets in rebuilding and moving forward when tragedy strikes.

This letter is too long already, so I'll conclude with best wishes to you all, and good luck as you re-imagine and recreate Minonk's downtown area for the 21st century. May you all have a joyful, healthy, and prosperous 2012!

Editor's comment: We do not have Ms. Vesterdal's email address and would like to thank her for her kind words of encouragement for our community.

Question on Asbestos in Minonk Fire

Dave,

Curious as to where you got your information on the rubble cleanup? I don't appreciate you stating that there is asbestos in the rubble when that has never been determined.

Todd Cremer

Editor's reply: A Pantagraph article published on November 1, 2011 had the following headline: Asbestos find slows fire cleanup in Minonk

How would you like to be a part of life changing event?

On December 8th at 6pm, the Minonk to Peoria St. Jude Run team will be having an Informational Meeting (snacks and refreshments provided) at the First Baptist Church in Minonk. Angie Weibler, St. Jude Run Manager, will be at the meeting to answer questions and provide information about how your participation in the Minonk to Peoria St. Jude Run can significantly impact the lives of the children and families who benefit from the care of St. Jude.

The Minonk to Peoria St. Jude Run is an auxiliary run of The St. Jude Memphis to Peoria Run. The team is made up of runners, drivers, medical professionals and other volunteers from the Minonk area that run relay-style from Minonk to Peoria (42 miles) to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis and the Midwest Affiliate in Peoria, Illinois. Last year was the inaugural year for this team and with the support of friends, family and the local community they were able to raise $28,000 for St. Jude. The team has set a goal of raising $50,000 in 2012 and to do that we need your participation!

Please join us on December 8 to find out how you can be a part of this amazing life changing opportunity!

For more information about the meeting, please contact Jodi Timmerman at at 309.242.1036 or at jasontimmerman@mchsi.com. For more information about St. Jude Runs organization, please visit www.stjuderuns.org. Look forward to seeing you there!
