Barbara J. Smith, nee Hakes, age 89 of Plainfield, IL since 1957, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at her home. She was born December 14, 1928 in Streator, IL to her loving late parents, Elmore and Henrietta Hakes. Cherished wife of the late Donald W. Smith, wedded June 8, 1952. Beloved mother of David (Bobbie) Smith of New Mexico and Mark Smith of California. Dearest sister of Clint (Karen) Hakes of Arizona. Aunt of many nephews and nieces.

Barbara graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University and was an active member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was an active member of the Plainfield United Methodist Church, participating in the Widows group, Lunch Bunch, and Bible Study groups, as well as in knitting prayer shawls and writing cards to sick and elderly church members. Barbara taught Spanish at Plainfield (Central) High School for 25 years until retirement in 1990. She also was active in the Plainfield Retired Teachers, Plainfield Park District, and Red Rover Social groups.
