He was born in Illinois to the late James D. and Lorna J. (Meils) Sample. James was a 1963 graduate of Minonk Dana Rutland High School where he was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and track. After graduating he was employed by Caterpillar in Illinois until he was drafted into the United States Airforce. He honorably served until 1966. 

James had quite an imagination and entertained many with his great story telling ability.

He is survived by his sisters, Kristina L. Hill, Bloomington, Illinois and Sally A. Fox, Longwood, Florida; two nephews, Brett Fox and James Derek Sample; niece, Staci Stemley.

Burial with military honors will be held at a later date in Minonk Cemetery, Minonk, Illinois.
