The Spirit of the Season
We
all have nostalgic memories that come to mind at this time of year.
Regardless of how you celebrate, the holiday season is a time to
reflect on the blessings we have received and offer thanks for
cherished family and friends.
All
too often we get caught up in the lights, the gifts, the many Christmas
parties and obligations that accompany the holiday. We get stressed out
trying to find that perfect present, or let the long lines at the store
cause us anxiety. We let our focus shift to the commercialism of the
holidays, and we miss the opportunity to reflect on the most important
gifts in our lives—life, health, family and freedom.
This
year, I encourage all of us to make an extra effort to be respectful
and courteous. There are so many opportunities to make a positive
impact on someone’s life. From taking the time to open your wallet and
donate a dollar to the Salvation Army as you leave a store, to
volunteering at the local soup kitchen or visiting your area nursing
home, there are many different ways you can contribute to the spirit of
the season.
And remember—a smile or friendly greeting is a gift that doesn’t need a receipt or tags to be returned!
As
you take a moment to enjoy time with family and friends, please send up
a thought or a prayer for the many dedicated Americans who cannot be
with their loved ones this holiday season. Our military men and women
in the Middle East are sacrificing
far more than eggnog to fight for their country—they are sacrificing
time with husbands and wives, parents and children. Please remember
these dedicated men and women, and wish them safety and happiness.
As
you do, please reflect on the ongoing gift that our founding fathers
left us—the gift of democracy. We are blessed to live in a country
founded on freedom and liberty, and we should offer thanks every day
for the many rights that we all too often take for granted.
When
I remember this, it helps me keep the holidays in perspective and to
remember and cherish my own blessings all the more. I look for the
positive impact I have had on the lives of others, and I seek out ways
I can make an impact in the coming year.
From my family to yours, have a blessed holiday and may God bless America!
