Former Minonk resident recognized for efforts in Afghanistan
Tuesday, November 08, 2011 - Posted 10:26:08 PM
Former
Minonk resident Matt Kalkwarf recently met CIA Director David Petraeus
while serving in the United States Air Force in Afghanistan. The
Director presented Matt with a specific coin, only given out by Petraeus
in special recognition, for his efforts and support while in
Afghanistan.
Matt is part of the International Security Assistance Force
(ISAF) communications team supporting General John R. Allen in his
command of the U. S. forces in Afghanistan. General
Allen succeeded Director Petraeus' command position in Afghanistan after
Petraeus was placed with CIA. Matt commented that Director
Petraeus still likes to maintain some communication with the ISAF
staff still assigned to that region.
Matt has been in the U.S. Air Force since 2003 where he has
achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He is married to U.S. Air
Force Staff Sergeant Valerie (Strouse) Kalkwarf, also a former Minonk
resident, who is currently deployed to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
When the Kalkwarf's are not out on their deployment, they are stationed
at the U. S. Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany.
