Excavation of the reservoir at the old cheese factory continues. John Durre, co-owner of the reservoir, said plans are to dig the reservoir to a depth of 18 feet. Upon completion, the pond will be filled with catfish, bluegills and red ear fish. Red ear fish are bottom feeders and eat many invasive species. Minnows will also be introduced. After about a year after the minnows have had time to multiply, game fish such as bass will be introduced.
Another use of the pond will be to provide a source of water for the Minonk Fire Department if additional water is needed for a fire. The pond will hold up to 2 million gallons of water which should provide enough additional water for any fire.
Durre said next year they plan to plant trees and shrubs around the reservoir to provide shade and beauty around the reservoir.
