The Veterans and Family Support program consists of 4 parts, National Military Services, where we directly help the veterans by having farewell and welcome home activities, given by VFW Posts around the country. Donations received help fund the Military Assistance program, Operation Uplink phone cards and Unmet needs as well.
The VFW National Childrens home in Eaton Rapids, MI, is a wonderful home for children and families of the VFW and active military personnel. Illinois Day is October 1st & 2nd, 2010, anyone who would like to see this campus is welcome to visit. Ladies auxiliaries support the home through donations to Health & Happiness-Christmas Cheer program, and saving and sending Campbells labels for Education to the home. The Childrens home was recently able to purchase a $60,00 small bus, to transport children at the home, this included cash donations as well as saving the Campbell labels.
Everyone is familiar with the cute little red Buddy Poppy, they represent the sacrifices made by our veterans, and remind us, the little poppies are made by our own veterans in VA homes, such as LaSalle Veterans Home in LaSalle, IL. A portion of the donations received for the poppies, goes back to the home where they are made. Support your veterans the next time you see an auxiliary or post member handing them out.. and wear them proudly...
The fourth program within Veterans & Family Support, is the Continuing Education Scholarship program. To apply for a scholarship form, you must be a VFW auxiliary member, or the spouse, daughter or son of an auxiliary member. Scholarships are for $1,000 each and the deadline to have the application to National headquarters is February 15, 2011. If you are interested, contact an auxiliary member. The applicant must be at least 18 years of age, and would need to write a brief essay of 300 words or less on how the scholarship will help you.
