The annual Veterans of Foreign War's State convention was held from June 24th to the 27th in Springfield. Attending from the Minonk auxiliary were Judith Reeser of El Paso, auxiliary Treasurer and Lavern Kearfoot from rural Towanda, Jr. Vice President.
Several Minonk VFW members were honored at a Memorial service on Thursday evening, they were from Post 7185, Ernest E. Gerdes, and from the Auxiliary, Agnes Nemmers, Marjorie Barth and Beverly Cosner. Music was sung by the St. Frances Cabrini Church choir, the Gold Star parents were honored at this ceremony.
The Voice of Democracy essay contest for 2010 information will be given to the high school students for Voice of Democray and to the Jr high students for Patriots Pen essays. The theme for the VOD this year is..." Does my generation have a role in America's future? " The theme for the Patriots Pen essays is " Does Patriotism still matter? " The essay rules will be given to the schools in the fall, with the due date back to the Post/Auxiliary before November 1st, 2010.
The Patriotic theme for this 2010-2011 auxiliary year will be " The Cardinal Rule... Our Veterans". New Dept. Auxiliary President is Beverly Beyer from Staunton, IL. She was installed, along with all of her line officers, Program chairman, District Presidents, and Flag bearer's on Sunday morning.
In local auxiliary news...... the membership dues notices have been sent out, to all members, they should be sent to the Treasurer. On July 24th, at 10:00 a.m. there will be a School of Instruction at the Fairbury post building, for the ladies. Officers and trustee's should try to attend if possible. The next 7th district Post/Auxiliary meeting will be on August 1st at Hoopston post, beginning at 11:00 a.m..
It will be Buddy Poppy time again before long, support our Post 7185 men and our veterans with your donations to the poppy program. Our older veterans make the poppies, proceeds go back to their VA home.
The ladies auxiliary and post members will be traveling to LaSalle Veterans home on August 16th, to visit the veterans and see the new addition that was built for the residents there. Thank you to our Commander, Jim Jacek and crew for putting up the American Flags on Memorial Day.. and those who refolded the flags for storage. Volunteers are always needed, contact Jim if you can help.
Remember to say Thank You to our veterans who live among us, and Thank You to the veterans who come home from foreign countries.. they deserve our respect and gratitude !!!
