On March 2, Minonk native Jim Swan gave a presentation at the Illinois
Military Museum in Springfield, talking about the succession of battle flags
carried by the 90th Illinois "Irish" Regiment in the Civil War, during campaigns
thru the South, notably marching with General Sherman to the Savanna and then
up to Washington. Jim noted the first of three flags was
hidden by the flag bearer under his shirt during his capture at
Atlanta and internment at Andersonville. The second flag burned in
the great Chicago fire, while the third is currently on display at the
Museum.
Jim authored the book, Chicago's Irish Legion, The 90th Illinois
Volunteeers in the Civil War. His grandfather, who farmed west of
Minonk, served with the 90th.
