SPRINGFIELD - On Wednesday, February 6, Illinois legislators were given a preview of Governor Pat Quinn's 2013 legislative agenda when he delivered his "State of the State" address. State Senator Jason Barickman (R-Bloomington) was among the lawmakers in the House Chamber as the Governor gave his remarks. "The Governor's speech demonstrated that he is not living within the reality of Illinois government. He offered a long list of new programs and spending that - while noble ideas - are coming at a time when we are facing a financial crisis," said Barickman, "Our priorities must be to control spending and establish an environment where the private sector can create jobs for the middle class." In addition, Barickman said he was disappointed that the Governor chose to push gun control legislation, explaining, "Given the overwhelming financial challenges we face, I sincerely hoped the Governor would focus his priorities on the urgent needs of the state and not waste time and energy on anti-gun regulations that have already failed to win support in the legislature." Barickman emphasized that Illinois ' legislative leaders must prioritize and address the difficult fiscal challenges in 2013 if the state is to right its course. " Illinois already has one of the highest minimum wage rates in the country, and another rate increase will only result in fewer jobs for the poor and middle class." Highlighting the need for long-term, comprehensive solutions, Senator Barickman said, "We must confront our financial problems head-on, and enact long-term, comprehensive solutions that will begin to put Illinois on solid financial footing."
