The Minonk area received its second blizzard of the winter when 45 mph winds ushered in 10 to 12 inches of snow Tuesday and Wednesday. Schools were closed, City Hall was closed, Interstate 39 was closed, everything came to a standstill as everyone hunkered down and waited for the blizzard to take its toll.
Wednesday the snowplows still hadn't been out as they are waiting for the wind to subside as drifting is still occurring on the secondary roads in the country. The ferocity of the blizzard was heightened by flashes of lightning followed by tremendous claps of thunder. The snow started falling Tuesday noon and continued on through the night and stopped Wednesday morning but the wind continued to blow strongly creating 3 to 4 foot drifts. While the wind blew constantly between 35 to 45 mph, Roanoke reported wind gusts up to 64 mph Tuesday night.
Temperatures are expected to drop to 9 below Wednesday night as the cold front pushes through the Midwest. However, temperatures are expected to rise to the upper 20's by the weekend.
