January
2006
Make a
new resolution
The New Year is a time that always
fills me with excitement and hope for the future. It is a time to reflect on our many
blessings, and express thanks for our family and loved ones. We should view 2006
as an opportunity to begin anew, and enter it with optimism. It is an occasion
to turn over a new leaf and to practice forgiveness—of yourself and
others.
This New Year, we should all make an
effort to be respectful and courteous. Consider how you can positively impact
someone. Volunteer at the local breadline, visit at your local nursing home, or
donate to a canned food drive. And always remember that a smile or friendly
greeting is a gift that doesn’t need a receipt or tags to be returned.
This year, many dedicated American
servicemen and servicewomen remain overseas, away from their loved ones. While
we enjoy time with family and friends, please take a moment to think about our
military men and women in the Middle East who gave up more than festivities.
These men and women are
sacrificing memories, they are sacrificing quality time with husbands, wives and
children, and they are sacrificing their lives to ensure our freedom, and the
freedom of a people who have lived so long without sovereignty. As we begin this
new year, please remember these dedicated men and women, and wish them safety
and happiness.
As you do so, consider the gift that
our founding fathers gave to you – the gift of democracy, of life in a nation
where you do not live daily in fear. Our
brave soldiers continue to fight so that another nation may realize the gift of
peace and prosperity. Although that nation has different customs and traditions,
they are working towards a government that allows freedom and liberty, and they
look forward to a day when their country operates under a autonomous system of
government.
This New Year give thanks
for our nation, and for the brave men and women who fought for our freedom years
ago. Throughout history the United
States military has put their lives on the
line to preserve our independence, and the liberty of others. Make a resolution
to keep these men and women, and their family and friends, in our thoughts and
prayers, not only now, but as long as the hostilities
persist.
Recognizing these realities helps me
keep this time of year in perspective. I remember and cherish my own blessings
all the more, and look to the New Year with great hope. I strive to positively influence others, and
I seek ways in which I can make a positive impact in the coming
year.
From my family to yours, have a
blessed New Year and may God bless America!
