Minstrel show - 1916

Minstrel shows were popular in Minonk years ago. This photo was taken in 1916. The minstrel show was held either in the Schlitz Opera House or the Pickard Building on East Fifth. The woman standing in the middle back is Claire Snyder and the man in the middle without blackface is a young G. H. Leffers. Herman Defries, who is shown in this picture, got his nickname "Coon" while participating in the minstrel. The Minonk of 80 years ago was not always politically correct.
