Minonk's July 4th celebration has been an annual event for over 60 years due to the efforts of its volunteers. This year's celebration was another success due again to the dedication and hard work of its volunteers. This year's event was hampered by extremely high temperatures in the low 100's putting an extra strain on the volunteers. Nevertheless, things ran smoothly.
The parade, led by Parade Marshall Jack Jochums who has been a lifelong volunteer in Minonk, was a success and the fireworks were outstanding. The afternoon at the Westside Park brought back memories of long ago July 4th celebrations when the park was the center of events from morning until the fireworks at night. The chicken dinner at the pavilion, the inflated portable rides and games for the kids, the vendor stands, people sitting around visiting all made for an enjoyable walk in the park despite the heat.
Alderwoman Julie Redenius said unless more volunteers are recruited, next year's July 4th celebration will be reduced to just the parade and the fireworks. For those who have yet to volunteer in any community activities, now would be a good time to get started by signing up as a volunteer for next year's July 4th event.

The quality of life in a small community is directly related to the amount of volunteers willing to serve their community. It would be a shame to see the July 4th events reduced because of a lack of volunteers and would be a bad reflection on the community. Anyone who wishes to be a volunteer for next year's July 4th celebration should contact Julie Redenius at 432-2380 or City Hall at 432-2558.
