To start out the New Year, a new map feature has been added to this website. At the bottom middle of the main web page is a Google map showing the locations of viewers of MinonkTalk for the current day. The location of the viewers will not correspond exactly with the physical location of the viewer. Rather, it will be associated with the location of the ISP server that processes the viewers web site. If you are in Minonk, the server location can be in Mendota, Chillicothe, Roanoke, Eureka, etc. If you are in a large city, the server will probably be closer to the actual location of the viewer. You can zoom the map in or out by clicking on the + or - button at the upper left corner of the map. You can also move the map by holding down the left button of the mouse while on the map and then dragging the mouse in any direction. Also, by holding the mouse over a pin on the map, the location of the pin and the number of viewers for this day should be displayed in a little balloon. While this feature is not newsworthy as such, it does add interest to the website showing the diversity of viewers of MinonkTalk. We hope you enjoy this new feature. This past year in Minonk was marked by the warmest winter on record and the second hottest summer and driest summer on record. Farm crop yield was down substantially. The Minonk Wind Farm was completed with 100 towers put up between Minonk and Flanagan. The Wind Farm is reportedly supposed to bring in over $1 million dollars a year in tax revenue to the Minonk area, most of which will go the Fieldcrest school district.

The City of Minonk purchased the site of the great Minonk fire of October, 2011, at the northwest corner of Fifth and Chestnut. The site has been seeded with grass but no plans have been made as to its future use. Business wise, the Circle J Saloon at the alley between Chestnut and Walnut closed doors while Jumbo's Sports Bar & Grill opened at the south end of Minonk. Forty six deaths of residents and former residents of Minonk were reported while there was no reporting of births which does not bode well for the future. While we are slowly pulling out of the recession, we should take comfort in the fact that Woodford County is the second healthiest county in the State of Illinois according to a survey reported this summer. As this editorial is being written the fate of the country's economy rests in the hands of the House of Representatives. While no signs of sanity have been witnessed in Washington this year, we the people will survive and carry on in spite of our dysfunctional Congress. Happy New Year everyone!
