Donald D. Peters, Sr., 84, of Dana, passed away at 8:55 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 6, 2018) at Flanagan Rehab and Health Care Center.

He was born Dec. 8, 1933, in Rutland, to Clarence and Sonja (Halberg) Peters. He married Ruth Gaede on Dec. 12, 1954, in Minonk. She died Nov. 14, 1974. He later married Betty Huber Scheuer in Wenona. She died in 1991.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Annabelle (Francis) Loftus, Marilyn (Richard) Smith, Connie (Gary) Hovey; two brothers, Harold (Rita) Peters and Ron (Bernice) Peters, his twin; and his son, Donald Peters, Jr.

Surviving are two daughters, Lisa Peters, Minonk, and Melissa (Mike) Knapp, Minonk; three grandchildren, Lawrence Knapp, Millville, N.J.; Jeremy (Hayla) Peters, Germantown Hills; and Katherine Knapp, Minonk; and two great-grandchildren, Ahlay Rose Peters and Silas Dean Peters.

Don was a U.S. Army veteran who was stationed in Germany. He also played trombone in the military band. He was a former member of Minonk American Legion Post 142.

Don worked as a farmer for most of his life. In his younger years, he worked for the Toluca garment factory. After retiring from the farm, he worked at the Minonk Casey's for more than 10 years. He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church, Minonk, where he also served on the committee on ministry. He taught adult Sunday school and was in the choir. He was a school board member of MDR for 21 years and served as president for 17 of those years. He formerly attended First Baptist Church, Minonk.

His funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ruestman-Harris-Funeral Home, Minonk. Pastor Eric Holtrop will officiate. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Saturday. Burial will be in Minonk Township Cemetery.
