City buys site of Minonk fire

The Minonk City Council approved the purchase of the land located on the site of the great Minonk fire of October 2011. The total purchase price for the 12,000 square foot parcel was $12,000. The land is situated at the northeast corner of Chestnut and Fifth streets and contained 6 separate lots. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The owners of the lots are Leiken & Leiken Law Office, Meyer-Jochums Agency, Dr. Naik Dental Office, Roger Gaspardo, Brian Peterson, and Todd Cremer.
City WebsiteThe council approved a contract for services to provide a web site for the City of Minonk for $3819. Town Web Site of Sturgeon, WI will create the web site and will provide 20 email addresses for the City and will charge the City $470 a year to host the web site.
New Speed LimitThe council approved a motion to reduce the speed limit from 35 mph to 25 mph on Chestnut Street between 7th Street and Moran Street.
Parks & RecParks & Recreation Supervisor Rich Lucky updated the council on the progress being made on improvements to the ball diamonds at Veterans Park. Luckey said the playing fields have been leveled and next week, the outfield fences and backstop will be put up and should be completed within a week's time. He said the diamonds will be ready for play by next spring.
Drug dogDr. Jim Drake of El Paso told the council about a program to provide a drug sniffing dog for the City. Dr. Drake said the City of El Paso purchased a drug dog for $18,000 through a combination of local donations and city money. The dog is to be used for sniffing for drugs around school areas and other places where drugs might be used. Dr. Drake wanted to make Minonk aware of this program so the City could investigate its feasibility.
