City approves $33K for sidewalk repairs
Monday, September 17, 2012 - Posted 8:43:42 PM
The Minonk City Council approved an expenditure of $33,000 for emergency repairs on the sidewalk in the 400 block of Oak Street. The funds will come from the TIF II fund. The initial danger had been remedied by Hein Construction but the sidewalk itself needed to be repaired as well.
Fieldcrest Youth Rec League FundingAndrew Nenne of Toluca appeared before the Council to explain the need for funding for the Fieldcrest Youth Rec League. The league was formed to provide support for 5th and 6th boys and girls basketball and girls volleyball. These sports are being dropped by the Fieldcrest School District. The newly formed league is recruiting funds from the Fieldcrest communities so these sports can be resumed. The Fieldcrest School District will continue to allow use of the sports facilities at Toluca and Wenona but will not pay for uniforms and equipment. Nenne said $7200 has been raised but only $200 remains after purchasing new uniforms and equipment. He said the City of Wenona has donated $1000 and Toluca has donated $500 and asked the Minonk City Council to consider making a donation. Mayor Pro Tem Fortner said he will refer the request to the Parks & Recs committee and get back to him.
Parks & Recs ImprovementsParks & Recs Director Rich Luckey updated the council on planned improvements at Veterans Park. Luckey said improvements are to be made to the west ball diamond and an instructional field is planned that will include a t-ball park as well as for being used as a practice field. In addition, two new batting cages are in the plans. Bids have been let for these improvements but no bids have yet been returned. Luckey said $33,000 has been budgeted for the improvements and wanted to know if the bids exceed $33,000 if the council would approve the additional cost. City Administrator said he would look into the matter but didn't think that would be a problem.
Water usage at Millennium Splash Park
The
Finance Committee met to discuss the water billing for the Millennium
Park Splash Park. The City had previously agreed to assist the park
with their water rates. City Administrator Gary Brennan presented the
water usage to date as well as the amount paid by the Group. The
discussion was held regarding re-visiting this agreement with the
Millennium group when they hold their next meeting.
Council Comments
Alderman Justin Faulk requested a meeting be set up to decide if the City should allow other non-highway vehicles on the streets of Minonk in addition to golf carts, which was approved earlier this summer. City Administrator Gary Brennan said he will consult with the City Attorney to determine what steps need to be taken.
