City Council hears complaints about weeds
Monday, May 07, 2012 - Posted 8:18:58 PM
The big topic at Minonk's normal Monday night City Council meeting was weeds. Minonk resident Bill Bane asked the council why something isn't done to enforce owners of property in Minonk to keep the weeds and grass at bay. Bane referred specifically to the South End Restaurant, the owner of the former Young Chevrolet building at Sixth and Chestnut, and the former Greentree Pharmacy building fronting Sixth street between Oak and Chestnut. Bane suggested to get some young kids to go around and help the city clean up these unkempt properties.
Dave Uphoff said the mulch surrounding the Westside Park Pavilion was full of weeds and needs to be removed and replaced. Uphoff said he will get some volunteers to replace the mulch with new mulch if the City would pay for the mulch. Mayor Koos agreed to that plan.
Aldermen Russell Ruestman and Justin Faulk expressed their concern over the number of properties that are unkempt in the city. Faulk said Minonk is going in the opposite direction of being a good place to live with the amount untidy properties in the city. Faulk said the council will give Poice Chief Nick Cavera full backing to go after owners of unkempt properties. Alderwoman Keri Carls also mentioned that the building formerly housing Trinket and Treasures on Chestnut Street is looking pretty bad and needs to be cleaned up. Alderwoman Julie Redenius said the house across from her street has grass a foot high.
In agenda business the Council approved the release of a mortgage for Fast Break Food Mart at the Caroline Development.
The Council approved a TIF 2 Award of $5,700 to Meyer-Jochums Agency for roof replacement at 119 W. Fifth and 474 N. Chestnut. The agency relocated into the building after the great fire on Chestnut Street last October and is in the process of remodeling and upgrading their new location.
Mayor Koos summed it up by saying that property owners, absentee landlords, and the city all need to pitch in and clean up Minonk.
