City Approves Budget

The Minonk City Council approved the budget for 2012-2013 which starts May 1, 2012. The City has an estimated on hand balance of $1,977,807 as of May 1, 2012 and anticipates an ending balance of $2,051,810 on April 30, 2013. Mayor Bill Koos says the budget includes provisions for future expenses. $30,000 was added to a fund for the painting of the City water tower which needs to be done during the 2014-2015 fiscal year; $30,000 for the Sixth Street lift station; $70,000 for a new generator for the water plant in fiscal year 2013-2014; $25,000 for the repaving of Chestnut Street during fiscal year 2018-2019; and $25,000 for the repair of West Fifth Street in the near future. In addition, funds were allocated for the reconstruction or addition to the ball fields at Veterans Park to meet the needs of the softball leagues, and a study to determine the necessary updating of the waste water treatment plant which hasn't been upgraded since 1977.

In other news, the council tabled a proposal to purchase electrical power for the Public Works building from Energy Alliance until a later session.
Alderman Nick Fiorini revealed a plan for parking restrictions around the concession building at Veterans Park. A "No Parking" area will extend from 15 feet to the west of the concession building to 18 feet past the east edge of the ovehang.
Tim Land was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Committee.
Mayor Koos thanked everyone involved in helping to prepare the new budget.
