City revises sewer connection policy

The Minonk City Council approved a recommendation by the Public Works Committee to take ownership of the sewer line that runs from the "roundhouse" on South Oak Street to the manhole on Third Street. The action was the result of a request by John Hawk, who owns a commercial building at 203 E. Third Street, to have city water and sewer connected to his building. It had previously been determined that a water main located in front of the building could be tapped to provide water service. However, the nearest city sewer is at the northeast corner of a residence at 203 E. Third Street. Per Minonk City Code, it is the responsibility of the property owner to furnish, at their own expense, the necessary labor and materials to construct the sewer line from their property line to the point of contact with the city sewer.
Alderman Justin Faulk motioned that the City take ownership of a sewer line that's on the City right-of-way. Faulk added that it's not necessary to include a location in the motion; that as long as a sewer is on a right-of-way it will be the City's responsibility to maintain it. Administrator Doug Elder cautioned that the motion would have a far reaching city-wide impact.
Alderman Faulk said the Council could discuss at a later date how to handle the rest of the town.
In other business, City Administrator Elder said the pump at the Sixth Street pump station is going bad and will probably have to be replaced. Specs are being prepared to get bids for a new pump.
